(excerpt)
Cindy Lange-Kubick: A big hand for the Huskers

“It’s two weeks before kickoff, and a guy in a giant foam cowboy hat is trying to teach me how to properly use a giant, corn-shaped finger.

Wave it, Matthew Theis says, when I slip it on my hand.”

NAB 09 Thursday: Last Night in Town

Posted on 25. Apr, 2009 by Brett Bittner in Work

This morning I listened to Jane McGonigal (Game developer/researcher, noted for the “I love bees” site) discuss the future of online games. At the end of the keynote she showed us her personal project, an online dance party.

We hung out with our swiss neighbors after the show. They are exhibitors with Pyramix (Pro Tools for the rest of the world). Their next demo is for a Los Angles studio remastering Stevie Wonder’s collection.

For our last night in town we met up with Myron’s cop friend and destroyed Fremont st. We had a blast at the Beauty Bar, a 50s era beauty salon converted into awesome. We meet some friends (pictured). Before leaving Vegas we decided to play one game of craps. I turned $20 into $160, Vegas pays.

Our Top afterschool activities of 2009
1. Beauty Bar – Awesome
2. The Griffin – Medieval style bar on Fremont. Good atmosphere, cool music.
3. Wynn Blush – Great if your on the list or have lots of money.
4. Best Western lobby restaurant – Nothing too fancy just a good food quality to price ratio.

Overall NAB 09 was a great success. I’m returning with lots of knowledge and tons of notes. Made some new contacts and friends. Also, switching from Final Cut to Avid.

NAB 09 Wednesday: Minority Report

Posted on 25. Apr, 2009 by Brett Bittner in Work

Social Media, Measuring Social Media, Web 3.0, Minority Report, and More Social Media
Today was spent confirming my previous fear, that yes, robots and social media will soon take over the world.

Location based services and experiences were a big topic. Integrating mobil apps with things like location awareness. Mobil applications are using situational awareness (and soon self-awareness) to deliver increasingly relevant content to users. Easy example: the iPhone weather app senses you leaving Baltimore on a train headed towards New York. Instead of giving the Baltimore weather it prompts New York weather. This could also help make a sale in the parts dept. of The Gap. Early adopters: Zhiing, Loopt, and sites like Yelp.

Euclid Media. Web video product placement. Watch the video if you haven’t seen this yet.

On the show floor I passed one of those digital signage companies that tracks who looks at a display. Supposedly great for measuring impressions and optimizing signage locations. A video monitor on their booth showed a green circle locked onto my face, like a fighter jet. It finds your face, can tell if you’re a kid, adult, male, female, etc. Then sends “anonymous” data off to the NSA… I mean advertising people.

Paul Vogelzang the executive producer of MommyCast gave some insight into MommyCast’s success and his relationships with advertisers.

  • Great research on the mom demographic here.
  • If you are making anything for moms; know all about the “Motrin Mommy Gate” disaster. Or, do some market research and stop overusing that kinetic type style on youtube.
  • Be better at storytelling that public relations. Advertising and public relations are merging.
  • Allow users to ad themselves to the brand
  • Keep watching your social media. Comments, blogs, etc are realtime audits of you brand.
  • Don’t forget Technorati, the blog search engine
